Girl Powered is a movement to change the face, idea, of the STEM field. A movement designed to show girls they are just as relevant as boys. That the STEM field may be male dominant but it does not have to remain that way. This is a movement made to empower, inspire, and change the thought process of young girls with great minds. --- Sam Ramos Eastwood Grad
In 2013, Mr. Raul Torres-Santos felt the need to engage students in STEM fields; thus, Eastwood High School Robotics Team 8787 was born. The “Clone Troopers” are an elite robotics team based in El Paso, Texas, as the first team in our city to attend VEX World’s 2015. Since then, we’ve had the privilege of attending World’s for five years in a row.
Members of our Team 8787 have been finalist at the VEX World Competitions for the Worlds Online Google Girl Powered Story twice, won the online Worlds Game Design Challenge Award, received the Teamwork Award, Won the Engineering Design Award for our Division at Worlds, and Won the Innovate Award for our Division at Worlds while our mentor, Mr. Torres, got inducted into the Worlds VEX Robotics STEM HALL of Fame.
Plus this year we won the 2020 Worlds VEX Robotics Google Community Award. Check it out here https://youtu.be/0GLv49xVKPA
Our focus is not only being great competitors in VEX Robotics competition but also in sharing our knowledge of STEM to our local community. We have fun hosting many robotics workshops at our feeder schools, our school district, and our local businesses. However our greatest achievment has been our annual Girl Powered Event that is open to girls from all around the West Texas El Paso area. Our first time hosting the event in 2016 we had over 350 girls in attendance—the largest in the nation—and our second in 2017 with over 450 young girls, 2018 brought us over 600+ and 2019 was our greatest so far with about 750+. This year 2020 our goal is to hit 900.
