|Robot Name:||Robot Slayer|
|World Skills Rank:||968|
Team Robot Slayer comprises of two Year 8 students, Puhara Te Riini and Kokako Raki. The team was chosen to represent our kura at the Robopā Mataatua Regionals in Whakatane. Puhara and Kokako have worked well together this season and have brought skills of building and driving to their team. They have also worked well with Team Terminator, as a key value of our kura is Manaaki and Whanaungatanga - Caring for Others and Relationships. The team is looking forward to participating at Palmerston North and to take part in a scrimmage at another level.
This is the second year that our kura, Te Whata Tau ō Pūtauaki has competed in the Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi program, Robopā. There were 6 schools involved last year and this year there were 23 schools from the areas of Te Taitokerau, Tamaki, Mataatua and Te Tairāwhiti. Team Robot Slayer, along with Team Terminator, participated in workshops for the Senior School to find who were our best builders and drivers. The teams were chosen on their ability and went on to represent our kura at the Mataatua Regionals, where they placed first. Team Robot Slayer then went to the Robopā National Scrimmage where they placed second to our other school team, Team Terminator. It was a great experience meeting other Maori students participating in the program and who had come from all over the North Island.
Te Whata Tau ō Pūtauaki is under the umbrella of Kura-ā-Iwi. All subjects are taught in te reo Māori and our curriculum aligns to our maunga, Pūtauaki and our two iwi, Ngāti Awa and Tuwharetoa. Our kura has supported our tamariki by ensuring they have the tools necessary to compete and to gain experience in Robotics. It is hoped that these students who compete at this level, will in turn, help and guide our younger students as they come through the Senior School.
