General Info

Information about the Robotics Workshop

**** PLEASE REGISTER AT THE FOLLOWING LINK ****

https://www.ucalgary.ca/ActiveLiving/registration/Program/2485?path=All_Robotics-Club

During the workshop, teams of students will be tasked with designing and building a robot to compete with other teams in game-based engineering challenges, like VEX Spin Up.

This event is for all girls; no prior robotics or programming experience is needed. It’s a great way to introduce robotics to those who may be curious, and we have sessions planned for a wide range of experience levels and interests.

WHO CAN  REGISTER for this workshop

  • A team which has a minimum of 3 girls, up to 5 girls.
  • If you don’t have at least 3 girls to register as a team, fill out this interest form. We will help you form a team with others interested.

  • Only girls going into middle and high school (grades 6 through 12 in fall of 2022) are eligible to participate in this event.

  • Each team should have one adult mentor present with them throughout the workshop.

  • All the participants should be fully vaccinated.

Please Note:

  • The mentor can be a parent/teacher and must be at least 18 years old. Since the role of the mentor for each team is to supervise and support the team’s progress, they  DO NOT need any prior robotics, tech or coding experience. The mentors are there to help largely with logistics of getting the team organized. We will have several trained volunteers on-site to assist each team with simple and advanced robotics questions.

  • A minimum of two weeks past the second shot of the vaccine. The health guidelines and requirements will be updated close to the event date.

  • All participants will be required to bring a signed participant release form.

Workshop Team Fees

The workshop fee is $40 per team ($10 per participant for a 4-girl team for both days). The fee for the workshop is fixed and is independent of the number of team members. This fee will be waived for girls and teams with any financial difficulty. Please email [email protected] with information on the nature of the financial difficulty. We will waive the fees.

We will provide the robotics kits to be used at the workshop, and we will have trained volunteers supporting the teams throughout the event. Each day will begin at 8:00 AM and finish at 5:30 PM (tentative times). On the second day, the teams will use the robots they build to compete against each other and win prizes.

We will provide boxed lunches and some snacks for all the participants. We may not be able to accommodate all dietary restrictions, so please be prepared to bring your own lunch/snacks if you have special dietary restrictions.

More details on the workshop and lunch options will be provided through follow-up emails for those registering for the workshop.

Once you have 3 participants and a mentor identified, here are the step-by-step instructions on how to formally register a team.

Step-by-Step Registration Instructions

Special Note:

  • Only THE adult has to register the entire team and pay the fees. The names of the participants are provided on a Google form linked at the end of Step 4.

  • DO NOT register a VEX VRC team for $150

  • DO NOT have the girls register as mentors. Only adults can be mentors

Step 1:  Create a RobotEvents account if you don't already have one.  Click the 'Register' button on the upper right corner.  After you finish the first step go to step 2. Do not click any button on the screen there to register a team. Follow step 2.

Step 2: Click the register yourself button on this Workshop home page and register the MENTOR or the registering parent. Save and Finish Registering" button which adds the event to the cart. One can then go back to the Workshop home page and from the top right Cart, go through the checkout flow.

Step 3: Checkout and select "Pay Later". Please then visit the PAYMENT page to complete payment for the team. If there is a financial reason and you are unable to afford the fees, please write to the contact email ([email protected]) giving us the reasons, and we will waive the fees. This completes the registration process.

Step 4: After payment. Go to: https://www.robotevents.com/account and complete the submission by editing the incomplete submission information. Complete the form with the information for all the team members (mentors, backup mentors and girls). Please ensure that you provide all the information indicated in the prompt. Please register between 3 and 5 girls (minimum of 3 girls). You will have the option to change the names of the participants until we close registration, but we require at least 3 names to secure a spot and register a team.

FAQ: If you do not have 3 participants and are still interested, here is what you can do

  • If you know you will eventually have 3 or more team members, You can still register a team, pay the fees, and reserve a spot and use a placeholder name. You can change the name of the student until 6 weeks before the event. However, you will have to pay the fees.
