General Info

Hello Everyone,

This is our fourth year hosting the Girl Powered VEX Robotics Workshop at Google for girls between grades 3 and 12. So far, we have had over 1,500 girls participate in these events, several hundred of whom have gone on to form teams and compete in the VEX Robotics Competition. If you are interested in participating in this weekend-long event, please use the information below to register.

Please read through the entirety of this before responding with questions.

Please also forward this to others that may be interested and spread the word in your school and community. A flyer for this event is attached below.

This year, in addition to robot-building, we plan to have booths, mini-workshops, Youtube celebrities, and keynote speakers at this event.

Workshop Links

For girls entering 6th-12th grade in 2020:

VEX VRC Workshop A: July-11-12, 2020

VEX VRC Workshop B: July 18-19, 2020

This year, for 3rd to 6th grade girls, we are introducing two new workshops where students will be working with VEX IQ kits. VEX IQ is an entry-level robotics competition that students often compete in prior to the VEX Robotics Competition (VEX VRC). These IQ workshops have extremely limited availability.

For girls entering 3rd-6th grade in 2020:

VEX IQ Workshop A: July 11-12, 2020

VEX IQ Workshop B: July 18-19, 2020

Additional Details

On each of the two weekends in July (Workshop A: July-11-12, Workshop B: July 18-19), Google will be sponsoring a 2 day girls only workshop STRICTLY for middle and high school girls (girls currently in 5th grade going to 6th grade are eligible) and their teachers/mentors who are interested in learning about the VEX Robotics Program. Workshops A and B are identical, so please sign up for only one of the workshops. This is also for girls who have no robotics experience. Girls who have been to previous workshops are strongly discouraged from signing up not only because the event will be similar, but also so that we can accommodate as many new students as possible. Last year, we held the workshop at the Google Event Center in Sunnyvale, CA and had over 850 middle and high school girls participate in this 2 day event.

The two day VEX Robotics Girl Powered Workshop is a collaboration between the Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation and Google. In the VEX Robotics Competition, teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. This 2-day workshop will be held at the Google Campus in Sunnyvale, CA in July 2020.

This is open to any girl who would like to learn more about designing, building and programming robots. No prior experience is required. If you have been to the workshop in past years, please do not sign up this year.

The team can be anywhere from 3 to 4 girls. Additionally, each team must register along with at least 1 mentor (maximum 2) who will supervise and guide the team during the workshop. The mentor must be at least 18 years old, can be a parent or a teacher, and does not need any prior experience with robotics. We will have several trained volunteers on site to assist each team. The role of mentor and parent is to supervise and facilitate the team's progress.

There will be a fee of $200 per team of up to 4 girls for VEX IQ and $300 for up to 5 girls for VRC (the fee is fixed for each team and is independent of the number of participants). This fee may be waived for teams that have financial difficulty. Please email with information on the nature of the financial difficulty to receive a fee waiver. Google and the RECF will provide kits for the workshop, and we will have staff volunteers to support the teams throughout the event. Each day will begin at 8:00 AM and will finish at 5:30 PM (tentative times). On the second day, the teams will use the robots that they build to compete against each other and win prizes. Lunch, snacks, and will be provided, but you will have to make your own travel and hotel arrangements.

This event is almost entirely volunteer-driven. For those interested in volunteering, the sign up form will be provided closer to the event. More details on the workshop and final signup process will follow to those that register for the workshop.

Detailed Registration Instructions (for mentors)

The steps to follow for the IQ workshops are the exact same as outlined below, but use the appropriate RobotEvents links for the IQ workshops (above).

Step 1:  Create a RobotEvents account if you don't already have one, at one of these links (Workshop A or Workshop B). Click the 'Register' button on the upper right corner to do so.

The mentor is the adult supervisor who comes to the workshop with the girls. You can list a backup mentor in the detailed information.

Step 2: Click the register new attendee button on the main workshop home page (Workshop A or Workshop B) and register the MENTOR.

Step 3: Come back to the main workshop page (Workshop A or Workshop B) and then pick the mentor from the drop down for the Attendee button.

Step 4: Complete the form with the information of all the team members (mentors and girls). Please register between 3 and 4 girls (minimum of 3 girls). You can change the names of the participants until we close registration, but we require at least 3 names to register.

Step 5: Pay the fees of $200 for the entire team (the mentor is responsible for coordinating the collection of fees from the team participants). If there is a financial reason you are unable to afford the fees please write to the contact email ( giving us the reasons, Google will waive these fees. This completes the registration process.

Make sure that you

- DO NOT register a VEX VRC team for $150.

- DO NOT have the girl participants register as mentors.

If you do not have enough members to form a team and are interested in finding others in your area with interest to form a team, please enter your contact information in this form. This form is for you to express interest in forming a team and find others in your school/neighborhood who are interested in participating in the workshop. All information input into this form will be shared with everyone interested in forming a team. The organizers of the workshop will not make any attempt to put together teams; it will be up to individuals signing up here to contact each other, form teams, and sign up on RobotEvents. Once you enter the information in this form you will receive a link with the contact information of others who are interested in forming a team.

Space is limited, so sign up soon. We had over 1200 girls interested last year and could accommodate only 800 across both weekends.  Since space is limited, we would encourage you to sign up for a team spot first so that you reserve a space and form the full team as you recruit team members.
