FAQ

Frequently Asked  Questions

Q. Which DYR Summer Camp should my child register for?

A. The introductory/intermediate camps are designed for students who have some or no VEX IQ experience. Those camps will be very structured, with more building and programming instruction for the students. The intermediate/advanced camps offer more creative freedom and are aimed at students that already have experience working with VEX IQ. If your child has been part of a Davis Youth Robotics team, or attended the summer camp last year, we recommend that they sign up for the intermediate/advanced camp. The advanced programming camps are for students with VEX IQ experience, who are interested in improving their programming skills. There will be no focus on the mechanical side of VEX IQ. Instead, students will be taught to implement the ROBOTC programming language. The camp will culminate with a series of programming challenges that require the use of sensors, motor encoders, and advanced programming logic. Lastly, the GIRLS POWERED summer camp is exclusively for girls, with an all female camp staff. This camp is catered towards students with little to no VEX IQ experience.

Q. My child has no experience with robotics. Is there a camp for them?

A. Yes! Our introductory/intermediate camps are designed to teach a student with no VEX IQ experience.

Q. What age groups are eligible for DYR Summer Camps?

A. Due to the limited camp availability, only children entering grades 4th through 8th are eligible. Students above 8th grade are encouraged to join the high school robotics team, Citrus Circuits.

Q. Can my student attend more than one week of DYR Summer Camp in one summer?

A. Due to high demand for our DYR Summer Camps, each student is limited to one week of camp.  This allows more students in our community the opportunity to attend camp. If you sign up one student for more than one week of camp, we reserve the right to waitlist them for the additional camps.

Q. If the DYR Summer Camps are full, is there a waitlist?

A. Yes, we do maintain a waitlist for all DYR summer camps.  If you have been placed on the waitlist, you can always contact the DYR Summer Camp Coordinator at davisyouthrobotics@gmail.com to find out your student’s position on the waitlist.

Q. What is the cost of one week of DYR Summer Camp?

A. One week of camp is $250, which includes the cost of one camp shirt.  A limited number of Half and Full scholarships are available - details on how to apply for a scholarship are included in the registration process. We do not offer family discounts for those registering more than one student.

Q. Does Citrus Circuits offer any before or after-care for students?

A. No. Citrus Circuits will not offer any child care before or after camp, and will not be held liable for students outside of camp hours. Students should be dropped off and picked up promptly.

Q. What is the camp refund policy?

A. [2018 Policy] For the 2018 DYR Summer Camps, full refunds are offered up until April 1, 2018 and half refunds are offered up until April 15, 2018. Past April 15, 2018, we will be unable to refund any schedule changes or dropouts.

Q. What does the camp agenda look like?

A. [2018 Agenda] Each day of camp begins at 9 and ends at 3, and each day of camp has regular snack and lunch breaks. For all camps except the Advanced Programming camp, parents are welcome to come and watch the end-of-camp scrimmage. Scrimmage will begin on Friday with the Auto Challenge and the Skills Challenge, and will continue after lunch with cooperative matches.

Q. How many students are in the camp?

A. Each camp will have 24 students, and each student will work with another randomly selected student.

Q. Where will the camps be held?

A. [2018 Policy] The camp will be held in room M-1 of the Davis Senior High School.

Q. Who are the camp instructors?

A. [2018 Instructors] Steve Harvey will be teaching the first, second, and third week of camp (Intro/Intermediate, Intermediate/Advanced, Advanced Programming). Anthony Diaz-Vigil will teach weeks four and five (Intro/Intermediate, Intermediate/Advanced), and Christina Rohlf will teach the sixth week (Girls Powered).

General Info

In this week long camp, students discover and develop science, math, engineering and programming skills through an engaging robotics competition. For the Intermediate/Advanced camps, experience is required. The camp takes students through a project-based challenge, culminating in a fun and interactive competition with peers where students get to put their creations to the test.

This camp is led and taught by Steve Harvey, the Robotics Education Instructor at Davis Senior High School and Head Coach of the World Champion Citrus Circuits Robotics Team. In addition, camp counselors experienced in VEX will work one-on-one with students to help their designing and programming process.

Due to the limited camp availability, only children entering grades 4th through 8th are eligible. Students above 8th grade are encouraged to join the high school robotics team, Citrus Circuits.

Half and full scholarships are available. If interested, visit this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSchKgky36kAdTBVUL5GDKpmUcDAs1HuF9gwFHlGQZVwBVPHEw/viewform
