General Info

DRIVERS, START YOUR ROBOTS! Welcome to SPEEDWAY: HIGH STAKES, Indiana's V5RC Signature Event.

The GREATEST SPECTACLE IN ROBOTICS is back at the world-famous Dallara IndyCar Factory in Speedway, Indiana, for the fifth running of the Speedway Signature Event! The Dallara IndyCar Factory is located just minutes away from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the biggest spectator sporting venue in the World. Each year, it plays host to the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in IndyCar auto racing.

For the fifth year running, the 2024 Speedway event will feature exceptional evening entertainment on Friday night! Here’s what we have planned this year:

  1. The Pit Stop Challenge — team members work together to change a tire on a real IndyCar as fast as possible. The winners are recognized at our awards ceremony in Winner’s Circle, presented by Dallara.

  2. Indy500 Solo Racing — our classic simulators will return to allow competitors to feel the thrill of driving 235 miles per hour around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

  3. [NEW] Indy500 Team Racing Competition — new this year to the Speedway, racers can compete on a “team,” similar to the structure of the real Indianapolis 500. Racers simultaneously start their race on simulators placed throughout the facility, and teams can communicate through headsets. Audience members can watch a television-like broadcast of the races live on our LED screen

Find additional information at SpeedwaySig.org.

  • Tournament Champions (x2)
  • Excellence Award

Code of Conduct

The REC Foundation considers the positive, respectful, and ethical conduct of teams to be an essential component of the competition. Participants are expected to behave in a respectful and professional manner, and to operate as student-centered teams with limited adult assistance. This includes all students, teachers, coaches, mentors, parents, and spectators associated with a team.

For more details, please refer to the REC Foundation Code of Conduct and Student-Centered Policy. If you have concerns about compliance with the Code of Conduct, please speak to the Event Partner during the event.

Judging Format

EDIT November 19, 2024:

We are aware of November update to the Guide to Judging.  Because Digitial Engineering Notebooks were submittted for this event prior to the update, we will not be using the update.  We will use the August 19, 2024 version of the Guide to Judging.  We apologize for any confusion.

ORIGINAL POST:

The Speedway takes judging very seriously. Our highly experienced Esteemed Corps of Judges from all over the United States puts in more than 650 hours to make our effort complete. We employ a hybrid judging format. Here is what that means:

Engineering Notebooks will be reviewed in advance of the event by the Judges.  We believe this will allow the Judges to spend more time with the notebooks and therefore better reward the awesome effort that teams put into their notebooks.  We ask that all teams submit their Engineering Notebooks on RobotEvents NO LATER THAN midnight on Saturday, November 9th, 2024.

Team Interviews will be conducted in person in the pits on the days of the event.  All teams will be interviewed at least once, so be prepared to tell us why your robot is great!  Interviews should be around 10 minutes in length, so be sure to practice being concise and impactful.  Some teams may receive second interviews if the Judges need additional information.

If you have any questions about the judging process, please email the EP and we will try to answer them.

Signature Event Early Bird Policy

  • All Signature Events will have a specific Early Bird Registration that is independent of all local/regional Early Bird systems
    • Each team starts the season with three (3) opportunities to register during the Signature Event Early-Bird period
      • An opportunity is taken away each time the team registers for a Signature Event, whether during the Signature Event Early-Bird period or Standard period
      • A Signature Event Early-Bird opportunity is not taken away if a team registers for a tournament hosted by their school or organization (where the team’s coach is the Event Partner)
    • Early Bird Registration will open 16 weeks before the event at 12:00PM EST
      • Note: Modifications to this may be made for events in August and September
    • Standard Registration will open 14 weeks before the event at 12:00PM EST
    • An Event Partner may register their own teams to their Signature Event during Signature Event Early Bird Registration no matter how many other Signature Events they are already registered for
      • The Event Partner must be the Primary Contact for the teams they are registering
