General Info

Welcome to the Southern Maryland VEX IQ Tournament.  This event is hosted by the Great Mills High School Engineering Club.

This is a Maryland State Qualifying event open to middle schools.  This event is open to the public.  The event takes place in the GMHS Cafeteria.  The pit area is on the upper level of the cafeteria.  Competition tables are on the lower level of the cafeteria.  Parking is available in the GMHS parking lot.  Enter the main entrance and follow signage to the cafeteria.

During the Tournament, teams will have a minimum of three opportunities to participate in both Driving Skills and Programming Skills Challenges in addition to tournament matches.

In the Pit area there will be a minimum of two practice fields.  It is expected that teams practice good sportsmanship in sharing the fields and making sure scoring elements are replaced when a team finishes a practice round.

Upon check-in teams will be assigned an interview time.  Teams must be at their pit table ready for the interview at their assigned times.  

Skills Challenge field will be open from 10:00 am - 1:45 pm

Teams are permitted up to three (3) tries for Robot Skills and three (3) tries for Programming Skills.

Weather cancellations will be detemined by St. Mary's County Public Schools.  Please use www.smcps.org to find the latest information.

Refund and Payment Policies

If the Event Partner cancels the event: 

In the event of cancellation, all entry fees will be refunded minus the $5 RECF fee.

Teams are required to make payment by January 25, 2025.  Any registered team that has not made payment will be moved to the wait list to allow other interested teams to register.  Please contact Allen Skinner at [email protected] if your team requires special payment arrangements.

If a Coach/Mentor completes registration for the event then chooses to withdraw or not attend:

Entry fees will be refunded minus the $5 RECF fee IF there is a team on the waitlist that is willing to take the spot of the withdrawing team. 

Judging Format

  • All In-Person Judging - The Team Interviews and Engineering Notebooks will be judged in-person the day of the event. Teams should bring a physical copy of their notebook to submit to the judges.
