General Info

STEAM Team is proud to offer one of the hundreds of Girl Powered workshops that will take place around the world during the month of October, coinciding with the United Nations’ International Day of the Girl on October 11, 2024.

Girl Powered is a global initiative created through a partnership between the Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation and VEX Robotics, who are working to redefine the face of STEM and make robotics reflective of the diverse world we live in, and the one we want to leave behind.

This workshop will feature hands-on STEM activities, robotics demonstrations, interaction with local STEM enthusiasts and high school competitive robotics young ladies and an opportunity for attendees to take the Girl Powered Pledge.

STEAM Team is excited to support the REC Foundation and VEX Robotics by hosting a Girl Powered workshop. We recognize the perseverance, teamwork, and problem-solving skills that students gain from participating in competitive robotics programs like VEX Competitions, even over the course of just one season. This Girl Powered workshop will reach more young women who might have an interest in robotics and STEM, make them feel welcome, have fun, show them they belong, and invite their creativity to take root and thrive!

About my journey in STEM and competitive robotics

I have been the Director of Camp Invention since 2012, a STEM, Computer Science and Robotics teacher since 2013, and a Robotics Coach since 2017 when I founded the competitive VEXIQ Robotics program at  St. Mary Catholic Middle School.   I  have experienced the results of the GirlPowered initiative first-hand, adding more young women to our programs and engaging them in STEM and robotics with increased confidence. I enjoyed attending my first GirlPowered Workshop in Louisville, KY at the VEX Worlds Championship where I had the opportunity to hear Sylvia Acevedo speak.   https://sylviaacevedo.org. She is well known scientist and the author of “Path to the Stars: My Journey from Girl Scout to Rocket Scientist”.

At the first robotics tournament that I attended there was one woman Judge. I pondered how we could engage more young ladies if those young ladies did not see female judges on the panel or as coaches. I vowed that day to train to become a Judge and since that day I have judged at local, state and World VEX Competitive Robotics competitions! I am proud of everything that I have learned and accomplished in STEM and look forward to passing on my knowledge and passion to the younger generations. I have launched STEAM Team LLC to be part of that journey.  At STEAM Team, we enrich minds of all ages through Science, Technology, Engineeering, Art and Math.  Watch for more exciting workshops and classes in upcoming months.

My team and I look forward to meeting you and your daughter at our event!

Best regards,

Christine
