Welcome to the South Dakota State VEX IQ Championship!

Skills Challenges will be available to all teams, with 3 Max Driver attempts and 3 Max Programming attempts per team.  

 

Competition Preparation

This event is sure to be a fast-paced and exciting event! All teams should come prepared for competition. Here are a few steps that every team should take to ensure that they are prepared:

1. Review the rules and run through the inspection checklist about a week before the competition so that there is ample time for adjustments.  The inspection checklist can be found here: http://link.roboticseducation.org/viqc_robotinspectionchecklist20192020

2. Check the official Game Manual for rule updates and changes here:

3.  Check the official VEX forums for rule updates and changes.

4. Carefully read all of the information contained in the tournament posting on RobotEvents.com

5. Pack for the event the day before the day of departure. Here are a few items that you don't want to forget.
Spare parts & tools
Batteries and chargers
Programming cable
Power strip
Laptop computer
Engineering notebook. 

6. Review the descriptions and criteria for the awards that are being given during the tournament.

7. Prep for your interviews with the judges. Check the awards tab to see what awards will be given during the tournament.

8. Remember that safety comes first, please don't bring tools that pose a safety risk to your team, or others nearby as the venue is a very tight fit. 

9. Understand how the game will be played. VEX IQ participants are more than welcome to take the Referee certification course or the Driver Team Training Course course

This includes all students, teachers, coaches, mentors, parents, and spectators associated with a team.

Agenda

Tentative Agenda – Subject to Change

IMPORTANT! If your team will be late, you must call the Event Partner (Jerry Sorum 605-366-7199).  If your team is not checked-in on time and no communication has been made, the match schedule will be run without your team and they cannot compete. 

Team Judging will be held in the pit area. If a team has not arrived by 9:30am when judging begins, teams will be visited at the end.  Please make yourselves available to the judges when they show up at your Pit table. If you have a match upcoming shortly or are running skills, respectfully inform the judges and agree on a time when you will meet with them at your pit table. 

8:30 am – Doors open, Registration, Pits Open
8:30 am – Robot Inspection Opens
9 am-- Skills Fields Open (Inspected teams only)
1 pm-- Skills Closes

10:45 am--Drivers Meeting

11:00 am – Qualification Rounds Begin

12:30-1 pm Lunch (Concessions available; no outside food allowed)
3:00 pm – Qualification Matches End
3:30 pm – Finals Matches (Top 10 teams will compete in finals)

4:00 pm-- Awards and closing

Volunteer

This event is fully volunteer run. Please visit the Sign-Up Genius:  or contact our Volunteer Coordinator Jerry Sorum 605-366-7199 for information on volunteering for this event.

No experience is required for many volunteer positions. Some volunteer positions can be split between two adults for a morning & afternoon shift. Or, you can volunteer for a whole day depending on the volunteer role. Lunch will be provided for all-day volunteers.

Emergency/Bad Weather Policy

The tournament will go on unless the interstates are closed for bad weather.  Teams will need to use their best judgment on safe travel.

Refund and Payment Policies

If an individual team or organization cancels after registering for the tournament there will be no refund. If a tournament should be canceled for any reason there would be a refund minus the $5 to cover the RECF cost. If teams or organizations are worried about losing money, they are encouraged to register closer to the event.

  • All In-Person Judging - The Team Interviews and Engineering Notebooks will be judged in-person the day of the event. Teams should bring a physical copy of their notebook to submit to the judges.
