Welcome to the 2nd annual Rumble in the Rockies Signature Event. This event will qualify to the VEX Robotics World Championships. We would love your participation!
This event for is for middle school teams. It will run for 2 days starting Wednesday, January 29th and end on Thursday, 30th. Please see the agenda for more details. We plan to have each team participate in 8-10 qualifying matches, depending on the number of teams that register and division requirements. We are planning to run two divisions. High school teams will compete in a separate event on Friday and Saturday.
Message from REC Foundation:
All approved events and event attendees are required to follow all local, state, federal, or any other government ordinances regarding COVID-19 safety procedures, social distancing, and best hygiene practices. Event hosts should continually assess, based on current government guidelines, whether to postpone, cancel, or significantly reduce the number of attendees when necessary.
We will update the travel section to provide information on discounted hotel rates as soon as we have it. We will be updating this section periodically with additional information on things to do. We will be adding more hotels to this page soon. We have also made a lot of arrangements to have a fun and safe event for everyone. We also hope to cooridinate with some of the local Ski Resorts to get discount passes so that those that want to extend their stay can see some of the beauty of the mountains in Utah.

Since this is an REC Foundation Signature Event, we are required to have a certain number of teams registered from outside of Utah for this Signature Event. For those coming from out of state, please let us know if you need any assistance. Please contact the event partner first for more information.
Lunch will not be provided by the venue. But rather they will bring in food trucks for participants to purchase food. The is a no outside food and drink policy much like at worlds. There are not many close options for food. But within a few mile radius there are a limitless number of optioins.

In the case of bad weather please contact the Event Partner to discuss options. We are used to adverse weather in Utah. If weather is bad enough to not run this event we will figure out the best path forward for all involved.
Refund and Payment Policies
If the Event Partner cancels the event: If the event is cancelled, a full event registration refund will be given to all paid teams. Teams are responsible for their own transportation and hotel costs.
Payment is due at the time of registration unless special arrangement has been made with the Event Partner. Teams who have registered but have not paid or submitted a PO within 2 weeks of registration will be moved to the wait list unless the event partner is contacted and arrangements are made.
If a Coach/Mentor completes registration for the event then chooses to withdraw or not attend: A full refund will be given if the Event Partner is notified four weeks in advance of the event. If notification is less than four weeks, but more than a week, a 50% refund will be given. If notification is less than one week, no refund will be given.

Event will be at the Utah State FairPark which is about halfway between the Salt Lake International Aiport and downtown Salt Lake. This is a large, 65-acre complex. We will be in the Grand and Heritage buildings which are in the southeast corner of the FairPark. There is plenty of parking close to these buildings, and parking is included in your registration fee.
We put out for bids on lodging and received responses back from several local hotels. After inspecting each one, we settled on the following three. Each has airport shuttle service, each includes a free, hot breakfast, and each has free parking.
The Crystal Inn is in downtown Salt Lake City. It is within walking distance of restaurants and other downtown attractions. It is also just two block from the rapid transit system. There is no fare for riding rapid transit in the downtown loop area. You can also take the bus to the FairPark for a $2.50 fare ($5.00 roundtrip). So if you are flying in, you could stay at the Crystal Inn and not have to rent a car. The Crystal in has an indoor pool, exercise room, bus parking, and we have made arrangements to use one of their conference rooms as an area where students can work on their robots, and interact with other teams. The rooms in the Crystal Inn are larger than normal. The room with two queen sized beds also contains a couch that can be pulled out into a bed. Rates are $169/night for 1 or 2 occupants in a room, and $179/night for 3 or 4 occupants in a room. There is a 15.82% room tax in downtown Salt Lake City, but this will be waived if you provide a valid tax exempt form prior to or at checkin. We have been able to reserve a block of rooms at the Crystal Inn that will be held through 12/15/23. After that, rooms will may be rented for the same rate, if they are available. If you plan to extend your stay in Salt Lake, or have not been to Salt Lake previously, we think you will enjoy staying in a downtown location. Click here for discounted rates at the Crystal Inn. Once at the link, got to the bottom of the page and choose your dates, number of people, rooms, etc. Then click Book Now, then Add Code, then Discount Code, then Group Attendee. Now type in your code which is RNR25. Now you should see the Rumble in the Rockies group rate. As an alternative, you can just call the front desk at (801) 328-4466, give them the same code, RNR25 and you will get the group rate.
The Hilton Garden Inn is close to the Salt Lake International Airport and is convenient for people who want to get in and out of Salt Lake quickly. It offers shuttle sevice to and from the airport, is also withing walking distance of rapid transit. It has an indoor pool, a very complete exercise room, and we have made arrangements to reserve half of their large ballroom. The complementary hot breakfast will be served to visiting teams in the ballroom, and the ballroom will be open all day for students who want to work on their robots, or socialize. The room rate is $154 per night for 1 to 4 occupants. There is a 13.82% room tax in Salt Lake County, but it will be waived if you can present proof that you are a tax exempt organization. Our block of rooms at the Hilton will be held until 14 days before the event (1/11/24). After this date, it will determine whether or not it can accept reservations based on a space- and rate-available basis at the group rate. Click here for discounted rates at the Hilton Garden Inn. It will come with the dates of the stay filled in, but you can edit those dates for a longer or shorter stay as you choose. Look for "edit stay" at the top right of the chosen dates.
The Hampton Inn & Suites Airport is another airport hotel. Its pool is outdoors, so it is closed in the winter, though there is an outdoor hot tub and sauna available. The nice thing about the Hampton is that it has really large rooms. You could set up a half of a field in their room that has two queen sized beds in it. Judging Format
All Remote Judging - The Initial Team Interviews will be conducted remotely, and Engineering Notebooks will be submitted to judges digitally via a link found within the "My Account" panel of the team contact on RobotEvents. Initial Interviews and Notebook submission deadlines may be scheduled ahead of the event date. Follow up interviews will be conducted in person at the event.

Signature Event Early Bird Policy
- All Signature Events will have a specific Early Bird Registration that is independent of all local/regional Early Bird systems
- Each team starts the season with three (3) opportunities to register during the Signature Event Early-Bird period
- An opportunity is taken away each time the team registers for a Signature Event, whether during the Signature Event Early-Bird period or Standard period
- A Signature Event Early-Bird opportunity is not taken away if a team registers for a tournament hosted by their school or organization (where the team’s coach is the Event Partner)
- Early Bird Registration will open 16 weeks before the event at 12:00PM EST
- Note: Modifications to this may be made for events in August and September
- Standard Registration will open 14 weeks before the event at 12:00PM EST
- An Event Partner may register their own teams to their Signature Event during Signature Event Early Bird Registration no matter how many other Signature Events they are already registered for
- The Event Partner must be the Primary Contact for the teams they are registering
- Each team starts the season with three (3) opportunities to register during the Signature Event Early-Bird period
