2138: SG2a Overall Footprint

<SG2>

SG2.a states: 'Robots may never exceed an overall footprint of 24” x 18".'

Is this “overall footprint” measured from the robot starting configuration, or the robot’s current configuration? Referring to the below diagram, if a robot’s starting configuration has mechanism A extended, is it legal for the robot to retract mechanism A and extend mechanism B, as long as both mechanisms are never extended at once?

A Robot's overall footprint is measured based on the Robot's current configuration. In your example image, the full retraction of mechanism A and subsequent full extension of mechanism B would be legal since the Robot's overall footprint never exceeds 24" x 18". The full or potentially even partial extension of both mechanism A and B at the same time would be a violation of <SG2> if the Robot exceeds an overall footprint of 24" x 18" at any point during a Match.
