Wedges and G12

G12 states: "Don't destroy other Robots. But, be prepared to encounter defense. Strategies aimed solely at the destruction, damage, tipping over, or Entanglement of opposing Robots are not part of the ethos of the VEX Robotics Competition and are not allowed."

Numerous teams this season have implemented wedges into their design. Though a wedge doesn't tip over a robot in terms of it being on a different face of the robot, it is a device solely aimed at tipping a robot at an angle to gain a defensive edge. Would any mechanism aimed at tipping a robot at an angle to gain a defensive edge be legal?

Our response to Q&A 1359 addresses your question in instances when a Robot's wedge is used to lift a portion of an opponent Robot and limit their movements (but not tip them over). In short, this situation can be viewed as Trapping at the Head Referee's discretion as described in that Q&A response.

Regarding tipping, rule <G12> indicates that strategies aimed solely at the tipping over of opposing Robots are illegal. Should a Robot use its wedge specifically to lift and tip over an opponent Robot, that would likely be ruled as a Major Violation of <G12>.
