Disc Caught in Net

Jess Zarchi
1-Dec-2022

Hello,

<SG9>

Keep Discs in the field. Teams may not intentionally remove Discs from the field.

a. Although Discs may accidentally leave the field, doing so intentionally or repeatedly would be a Violation of this rule.

b. Discs that leave the field during Match play, whether intentionally or unintentionally, will be returned to the field at a location nearest the point at which they exited. Referees will return the Discs to the field when it is deemed safe to do so, at the leisure of the referee.

Violation Notes: Major Violations of this rule should be rare; a single Disc exiting the field will almost always be considered accidental / incidental.

Occasionally, a Disc launched at a High Goal may exit the field by slipping through the bottom of the Net. When this happens, it should be returned to the Low Goal, since this would be considered the “location nearest the point at which it exited". See this Q&A for more information.

<SC3-B>

A Disc is considered Scored in the Low Goal for the Alliance corresponding to the color of the adjacent Barrier if it meets the following criteria:

...

b. At least partially contained within the vertical projection of the Low Goal (i.e., “breaking the plane” of the Low Goal).

...

Attached is an image of a Disc stuck in the net. This Disc isn't scored because it's contacting the net, but should it be considered out of field and returned to the nearest location? If not, this seems to hurt the alliance that didn't shoot the Disc (the blue alliance in the image), as they don't get the point for the red alliance missing. Is this intentional?

Thank you for your time!

This Disc isn't scored because it's contacting the net, but should it be considered out of field and returned to the nearest location?

Thank you for your question! The primary intent of the Possession limit in <SG7> and returning Discs to the Field in <SG9> is to maximize the availability of Discs for scoring during the Match.

We understand that the Disc in your example could reasonably be considered as being within the Field in a non-scored position, but we agree that the Disc in your example (and others in similar positions within the area of the Low Goal) should be considered as having exited the Field, and should be returned to the Low Goal. This ensures the Disc remains in play, and better promotes the intended interaction between the High and Low Goals.
