Follow up to Q&A 1115: Motor Cartridges + misc motor questions

2114C
26-Jun-2022

In Q&A 1115 is was ruled that it is legal to remove Motor cartridges from V5 motors.

For Motor Cartridges:

  1. Is it legal to remove components from the inside of a Motor cartridge for use elsewhere on the robot (gears, etc)? Previously in a similar ruling conceptually, the GDC ruled that it was legal to utilize 393 internal gears for other mechanisms on the robot.
  2. Is it legal to replace components inside of a Motor cartridge with legally manufactured parts (polycarbonate within the plastic limit, etc)?
  3. Is it legal to physically modify the outer casing of the Motor cartridge?
  4. Is it legal to physically modify the internal components of the Motor Cartridge?

Misc Motor questions:

  1. Is it legal to utilize the motor cap screws for other purposes on a robot, since the cap assembly is considered a non electronic component?

  2. Since the Motor Cap is not considered an electronic part, is it legal to physically modify Motor Caps which are are used to secure motors to the robot?

6a. If not, is it legal to physically modify Motor Caps which are not being used to secure Motors to the robot?

Thank you.

Answered by committee

For the purposes of R22, the motor cartridge should be considered an "electronic component". Per R20-c, they may only be replaced by other official replacement cartridges. Therefore:

No, these would not be permitted.

  1. Is it legal to utilize the motor cap screws for other purposes on a robot, since the cap assembly is considered a non electronic component?

No, these are not one of the screw sizes that are included in R11.

  1. Since the Motor Cap is not considered an electronic part, is it legal to physically modify Motor Caps which are are used to secure motors to the robot?

6a. If not, is it legal to physically modify Motor Caps which are not being used to secure Motors to the robot?

Yes. This would be similar to modifying the metal arm on a Limit Switch, which is expressly permitted by R22.
