990: <VUR10> and <VUR12> Powering Solenoids

MSOE1
3-Jan-2022

According to <VUR12> “Teams may utilize an unlimited amount of the following commercially available pneumatic components: Cylinders . . . and solenoids.” (clipped for brevity).

However, according to <VUR10> “Sensors and electronics CANNOT directly electrically interface with VEX motors or solenoids.”

Intuitively, we assume that this rule does not intend to prohibit the VEX Solenoid Driver Cable (275-1417), as that is a minimum requirement to utilizing pneumatics. However, the VEX solenoid cable is only compatible with a small number of commercially available 5V solenoids and most solenoids follow a 12V or 24V standard, is it legal to power solenoids with other electronics so that way solenoids that use these standard voltages can be used?

While past question and answers do not necessarily translate from year to year, this question was asked in the by WPI in the 2018-2019 Turning Point Q and A, and this situation was deemed to be legal.
