1106: Distance and Optical Sensor Modification

515R
1-Jun-2022
  1. Figure A- Can we rotate the sensor block 90 degrees from it's base plate?
  2. Figure B- Can we loosen the screws that connect the sensor to the base plate?
  3. Figure C- Can we remove the base plate but use the screws to attach the sensor to a custom polycarbonate base plate?

Our intention for doing this is to improve wire management and mounting on to the C channels. Figure A,B, and C only improves the placement of the sensor to the build and does not effect the sensor's internal workings.

<R20> No modifications to electronic or pneumatic components are allowed. Motors (including the internal PTC or V5 Smart Motor firmware), microcontrollers (including V5 Robot Brain firmware), cables, sensors, controllers, battery packs, reservoirs, solenoids, pneumatic cylinders, and any other electrical or pneumatics component of the VEX platform may NOT be altered from their original state in ANY way. a. External wires on VEX 2-wire or 3-wire electrical components may be repaired by soldering or using twist / crimp connectors, electrical tape, or shrink tubing such that the original functional- ity and length are not modified in any way. i. Wire used in repairs must be identical to VEX wire. ii. Teams make these repairs at their own risk; incorrect wiring may have undesired results. b. Teams must use the latest official VEXos firmware updates, found at https://link.vex.com/ firmware. Custom firmware modifications are not permitted. 46VEX Robotics Competition Spin Up - Game Manual Copyright 2022, VEX Robotics Inc. Version 0.1 - Released May 5, 2022 c. Teams may make the following modifications to the V5 Smart Motor’s user-serviceable features. No other modifications are permitted. i. Changing or replacing the gear cartridge with other official replacement cartridges. ii. Replacing or removing the screws from the V5 Smart Motor Cap (276-6780). iii. Replacing the threaded mounting inserts (276-6781). There are 2 parts of the Optical and Distance sensor: Block and flat piece which they are mounted on. Is it legal to rotate the block area 90 degrees img

Answered by committee
  1. Figure A- Can we rotate the sensor block 90 degrees from it's base plate?

Yes; this is an intended user-serviceable feature of the V5 Optical Sensor and V5 Distance Sensor.

  1. Figure B- Can we loosen the screws that connect the sensor to the base plate?
  2. Figure C- Can we remove the base plate but use the screws to attach the sensor to a custom polycarbonate base plate?

No, these would not be permitted.
