823: R6a Cortex Products

2114C
20-Jul-2021

R6a states:

Products from the Cortex, VEXpro, VEX IQ, VEX GO, VEX 123 or VEX Robotics by HEXBUG product line cannot be used for Robot construction, unless specifically allowed by a clause of <R7> or cross-listed as part of the VEX V5 Product lines

By this rule, parts that are listed solely under the "Cortex" product line are no longer legal in VRC. As a result of this, several parts which have been used by teams in the past are now illegal. Some exmaples are: Extension cables for non smart sensors: https://www.vexrobotics.com/extension-cables.html The Clutch that came with the vex servo. The Flashlight: https://www.vexrobotics.com/276-2210.html Motor Controller 29: https://www.vexrobotics.com/276-2193.html

Was it the GDC's intention to make these products illegal?

Answered by committee

Was it the GDC's intention to make these products illegal?

Extension cables for non smart sensors: https://www.vexrobotics.com/extension-cables.html

These are legal. Rules R6, R7, and R15 all reference the fact that the VEX product website is the most definitive resource for specific product legality. The product page linked here clarifies that these cables are legal for VRC and VEX U, and include the "V5" product line badge.

The Clutch that came with the vex servo.

The VEX 3-Wire Servo is explicitly prohibited by rule R18-a, which states that the V5 Robot Brain's 3-wire ports may not be used to control motors of any kind. Therefore, the clutch which is attached to the servo is also prohibited.

The Flashlight: https://www.vexrobotics.com/276-2210.html

The VEX Flashlight is not compatible with the V5 Robot Brain. Therefore, it is prohibited.

Motor Controller 29: https://www.vexrobotics.com/276-2193.html

The Motor Controller 29 was used to provide an interface between 3-wire ports and 2-Wire Motor 393's. These motors are explicitly prohibited by rule R18-a, as mentioned above. Therefore, these are also prohibited.
