1051: Trapping, avenue to escape

UWAT
14-Feb-2022

Trapping – A Robot status. A Robot is Trapping if it has restricted an opposing Robot into a small, confined area of the field, approximately the size of one foam field tile or less, and has not provided an avenue for escape. Trapping can be direct (e.g. pinning an opponent to a field perimeter wall) or indirect (e.g. preventing a Robot from escaping from a corner of the field).

It is possible to confine a blue robot to the area between the red platform and two red robots. In this case,

  • would the path to platform be considered an avenue to escape when there are more than 30 seconds remaining in driver control?
  • would the path to platform be considered an avenue to escape when there are less than 30 seconds remaining in driver control? If so, would this be considered to be not interfering with gameplay(one additional elevated robot for blue) or interfering with gamplay(DQ for red)?
  • Would the answer to the previous two questions differ if the robot is not capable of climbing platforms/tipping the platform?
  • would the "approximately the size of one foam field tile or less" be strictly one or less, or could it be more than one foam field tile? If more, what is the upper limit that a robot is no longer considered being trapped?

The answer to all of these questions is "no".

  • would the "approximately the size of one foam field tile or less" be strictly one or less, or could it be more than one foam field tile? If more, what is the upper limit that a robot is no longer considered being trapped?

The upper limit is "approximately the size of one foam field tile or less". The word "approximately" is intentionally used, instead of "strictly", to allow for Head Referee discretion in the context of a Match (i.e. it would not be reasonable to expect Head Referees to measure and track exact distances during this type of dynamic interaction).
