483: Modification to VEX Universal Joint

12-Jan-2020

Our team has a design using the VEX universal joint. We have encountered the long-bemoaned failure mechanism where the pins fall out of the u-joint under normal loading. We would like a ruling on whether this modification is legal, considering R22 in the game manual.

a. Add a small section of slip-fit thin-walled aluminum tubing over the outside of each half of the U-joint to retain the pins in the U-joint. This would slide over the U-joint just where the pin holes are and cover the pin holes. It would not in any way modify the function of the U-joint or structurally reinforce it, just retain the pins in the holes.

A ruling on this would be appreciated.

No, this is not legal.
